TO
Shri. V. Rama Kumar

MIT, Chromepet campus of Anna University, founded in 1949 by Sri. C.Rajam, is a unique Institution with pioneering ventures in unconventional engineering courses like Aeronautical, Automobile, Electronics, Instrumentation and by adding Production, Avionics, Mechatronics, Rubber Technology and Information Technology, MIT has carved a niche for itself.
In memory of Sri. C.Rajam, during his centenary birth year in 1982, AMITA instituted the scheme of conducting yearly endowment lecture and award of outstanding alumnus. This would be the twenty-sixth Alumnus award.
AMITA has the pleasure of selecting Shri. V. Rama Kumar of Instrument Technology faculty as the outstanding Alumnus for the year 2010.
Shri. V. Rama Kumar was always shining academically bright which enabled him to do his B.Sc Applied Science College of Engineering Guindy and move on to MIT to study Instrument Technology and pass out in the year 1974. After a short stint in the process industry joined IIM Ahmadabad to do his MBA Program.
On completion of his MBA program, Rama Kumar switched on to IT Industry. In 1982 he joined Wipro (a relatively unknown company at that time) as customer Service Engineer. In the next three years he moved on to the Sales and Marketing. The next 10 years saw his rapid growth from an Account Manager to Branch Manger and became Regional Manager and subsequently to General Manager at Wipro Bangalore, the Vice President Business Solutions division to finally to the job of Chief Executive Solutions & System Integration Division of Wipro Infotech.
Two years later he was handpicked by Azim Premji, Wipro Chairman as Corporate Vice President Six Sigma Quality and moved to the corporate office. His final assignment was as Chief Executive E-Enabling Division in Wipro Technologies when he made another calling in his career.
In 2000 he made a daring move to become an entrepreneur to start a new company Tarang Software Technologies along with two of his colleagues. He raised USD $5.5 Million through a V.C and built a beautiful development centre in Bangalore and set up sales office in California and New York.
Tarang Software acquired CyberCash India in a cash deal in 2001 and established themselves in Electronics Retail Payments space. Over the next 9 years Tarang established leadership in Mobile Payments, Contactless payments, POS payments and Payment gateways. It has a secondary domain in E-Learning where they have Infosys, Volvo and Wipro etc as their customers. Now in the 10th year it has blossomed in to a company with over 350 employees, earning USD $6 million in sales and being profitable every year.
Rama Kumar hailing from a Middle class family from Chetpet, Chennai did his early schooling from Madras Christian College School. He was a very good cricketer and captained MIT team. He is now happily married for 26 years. His wife Jayanthi is an Electronics Engineer and now works in a senior position with Wipro. They have been blessed with two boys. His elder son Rohit is now pursuing his MBA Program with IIM Lucknow and his second son Siddharth has just completed his MBBS program and doing his Internship.
AMITA takes great pleasure in awarding him Outstanding Alumnus and wish him great success in all his future Endeavours.
